Synopsis

Describes the development of Gabbie, a monkey living in a zoo, from birth to age six months.

Sharon Oliver - Children's Literature

This very appealing book follows the first six months in the life of Gabbie, a red-crowned mangabey monkey born in the Los Angeles Zoo. Gabbie's development is followed from her first hours clinging to her mother to the beginnings of young adulthood for the monkey. We are shown how Gabbie eats, plays and grows during her early childhood. The Hewetts make a wonderful team, with excellent photographs that will attract young readers accompanied by easily readable and informative text perfect for new readers. A timeline of Gabbie's first year is presented at the end of the book along with two pages of text with more detailed information on the monkeys. An index is also provided. This is an excellent choice for every collection. 2004, Carolrhoda Books, Ages 4 to 8.
