Overview

This book is a multi-disciplinary exploration of one of the most vital issues in the contemporary world. It breaks new ground by drawing together academics from a variety of disciplines includlng anthropology, history, law, linguistics. politics, psychology and sociology, to examine the way in which Issues of identity have impacted society and the way in which changes in Society have resulted in a reevaluation of identity.

Topics covered include German Identity after reunification, the political and legal problems of European citizenship, elderly migrants and political group identity. The book explores Ihe identity in three sections: British, European and Global. The main conclusion reached is that at any period in history the question of identity is a complex composed of interacting factors which combine in larger or smaller proportions to create the whole, be that individual, group, ethnic, religious, national or supernatural. The book sets out to identify facets that contribute to the whole and by so doing answers some of the current questions surrounding identity.

Booknews

Scholars from a wide range of social sciences examine how issues of identity have impacted both British and global society, and how changes in society require a re-evaluation of identity. They consider such dimensions as the Northern Irish identity, British Jewish women in the late 20th century, Bangladeshis, German identity after reunification, political identities and social struggle in Africa, and bilingualism and the construction of a new American identity. Most of the 13 essays were presented at a March 1997 conference at the Centre for the Study of Migration of the University of London. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknew.com)
