Overview

INVITATION TO MURDER

It's January '74. Nicklaus wishes he were home with the kids. Weiskopf is ready to make a charge, and so is a bell-bottomed blond named Miller. In the world of golf and the realm of fame, nothing matches the Bing Crosby Pro-Am tournament, played at America's most extraordinary golf course—Pebble Beach—and drawing starlets, stars, and billionaires by invitation only. But this year the wind and rains won't stop. And a corporate tycoon has dropped dead in The Lodge, crowded with celebrities.

For jaded veteran golf writer John Morris and his beautiful globe-trotting lover, Julia Sullivan, it's more than a dramatic story: it's a black eye on golf's most stellar event. Now, as Morris and Sullivan try to solve the murder, they find a collision of ambition, talent, and greed that reaches from the golden days of Hollywood to the windswept Monterey Peninsula—where a killer's game has just begun...

During the 33rd Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament at Pebble Beach in January 1974, participants are being randomly poisoned by cyanide. Real people, including the late "crooner" himself, mix with fictional characters in the fourth murder-'n'-golf epic featuring Associated Press sportswriter John Morris and his muse Julia Sullivan. Yes, this is primarily aimed at the large golfing market, but even non-golfers will be intrigued by the killer's motive and unusual M.O.though some impetuous mystery fans may find reading the golf anecdotes, golf history and golf jargon more like sitting out a rain delay. The raucous atmosphere of a big-time tournament and the raunchiness of the players, spectators and surrounding media are wittily portrayed, while travel and historical notes about the Monterey Peninsula add to the package.
