Synopsis

Scully, a young hearing-impaired girl, wants to play outside in the rain, away from her brother Leo and her busy mother. She loves to feel the sensation of the rain running over her face. After escaping briefly to the wet green trees outside, she is grounded and not allowed to leave the house for a day. As evening approaches, Scully and her mother are able to share a special moment together watching the stars.

Children's Literature

Winner of a Canada Council for the Arts Governor General's Literary Award, this is the story of a day in the life of Scully, a little girl with a hearing impairment. It's raining, and Scully loves it. She thrills in the "whooshing" noise of the rain, and she wants to go outside to play. Unfortunately, she's not allowed. She and her brother Leo have been fighting all morning, and they've been sent to their rooms. Scully sneaks out anyway, making her mom mad. The day doesn't end on such a bleak note, though. After dinner, Scully and her mom head outside to admire the stars, and even Leo doesn't seem so bad anymore. Text and illustrations combine to create an impressively realistic book.
