In 1892, Sir Wilfred Grenfell founded a medical mission that served the impoverished people of Labrador and northern Newfoundland for more than 80 years. While in college, journalist Toland (now retired) spent a summer doing manual labor at the mission station. Drawing upon his personal experience and recent research, Toland recounts the stories of the volunteers, ninety percent of whom came from the United States, and likens their mission to that of the Peace Corps.
