This is a guide to completing the Nursing Home Minimum Data Set (MDS). The purpose is to offer an easy to understand and use step-by-step guide about how to complete the MDS. The training materials are to be used by nursing home staff who complete the MDS. This is an item-by-item guide to completion of the MDS. Each section is covered in detail and tips, cautions, definitions, and examples are offered. The information is very well organized and easy to follow. While the book is well written and easy to follow, there simply is not a need for an unofficial guide to the MDS. This is very similar to the MDS User's Manual, which is HCFA's official publication guide to MDS completion. While this step-by-step guide would have made a good study guide to learning the MDS, that does not seem to be the intended purpose. Also of concern are instances where the editors do not accurately describe clinical conditions such as fever.
