Overview

The Basic Bookshelf for Eyecare Professionals is a series that provides fundamental and advanced material with a clinical approach to clinicians and students. A special effort was made to include information needed for the certification exams in ophthalmic and optometric assisting, low vision, surgical assisting, opticianry, and contact lens examiners.

This book is designed to help the eyecare professional deal with day-to-day occurrences when testing for strabismus. It is an easy-to-read text that will help the beginner identify various motility problems and understand which treatment options are most appropriate. While special attention is given to examining children, it also provides tips on how to successfully deal with ocular motility exams in patients of all ages.

Topics include:

  • The Four Part Exam: History, Fusion, Alignment, and Vision
  • Approaching Children and Infants
  • Approaching Adults
  • Extraocular Muscles - Anatomy and Function
  • Binocularity
  • Differential Diagnosis
  • Syndromes with Ocular Manifestations
  • Non-Surgical Treatment of Strabismus

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: David Saul Mora, OD, PhD(Omega Health Systems)
Description: This book is geared to help the clinician properly understand how to detect, measure, and follow a strabismus patient (Strabismus is the ocular condition where both eyes do not move or function together properly).
Purpose: With many different types of strabismus affecting patients of different ages and different etiologies, this book provides an explanation of strabismus care in a concise, structured manner. It fulfills a great need in this field.
Audience: It is aimed towards the optometric clinician, either as an adjunct to the clinical care of strabismus patients, or as a quick review.
Features: This book contains numerous tables and easy to follow illustrations on extraocular muscle deviation. It also contains a good chapter on differential diagnosis of strabismus in a table format.
Assessment: This book has a concise and systematic approach to strabismus. It is written for the optometric clinician but still has a thorough review of the material pertinent for the student as well. The section on acquired strabismus is just as clear and simple to understand as the general strabismus evaluation. The therapy portion of the book is weak and behind the times in the critical period and amblyopia therapy area. The basic evaluation and understanding of strabismus presented makes this book useful to any clinician that encounters strabismus.
