The book begins with the angel Gabriel's announcement of the coming birth of John the Baptist to his father Zechariah. Gabriel also tells Mary that she will have a son who will be great and will be called the "Son of God Most High." Jesus is born in Bethlehem and lives in the village of Nazareth until he is an adult. John becomes a preacher in the desert. When Jesus has John baptize him, "A bright light filled the sky and the Holy Spirit came down upon him. It looked like a dove." Strangely several pages are given to the teachings of John and none to the teachings of Jesus. The illustrations show the Jordan River running through the desert. This is a level 2 book from "A Read and Learn Bible Story" series. A level 2 book has "Vocabulary and sentence length for beginning readers." An educator's note to parents gives suggestions for use.
