Overview

There are two Jerusalems writes Heilman, one in which people actually live and the other that lives in them. It is the idea of Jerusalem, the imaginatively reconstructed city that exists in the memories and attachments of the many faiths that live and visit here, that Heilman explores as he walks about every corner of the city, discovering its layers of history and culture.

Library Journal

On a tour of Jerusalem offered by Haganat Ha-Teva (the Society for the Protection of Nature) Heilman realizes that the ``guide invited his followers to behold less what was there than what had once been there . . . This would be a tour . . . into the province of memory.'' Through a series of encounters and discussions with various inhabitants of and visitors to Jerusalem, Heilman uncovers the multifaceted and complex relationship of Jews, Christians, and Moslems in their holy city. Not a travel book in the usual sense, this is an emotional and psychological pilgrimage through Jerusalem from the perspective of its diverse residents. Beautifully written and rich in detail, it should appeal to an even wider audience than The Gate Behind the Wall, the author's widely acclaimed personal, spiritual pilgrimage. Recommended. Herbert E. Shapiro, Writing Prog., Empire State Coll., Genesee Valley Regional Ctr., Rochester, N.Y.
