About the Author, Martha Alexander

Sidney Lippman says, "Making an illustrated children's book out of the song is such a natural idea that I'm amazed the process wasn't reversed—that the children's book didn't come first, followed by the song."

Martha Alexander said, "I've never had so much fun illustrating a book. My editor and art director said, 'No limits—do it the way you want.' That really freed me. I especially loved putting the baby animals in the pictures." Martha Alexander died in 2006.

Editorials

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

A group of multiracial tots cavorts through the alphabet, illustrating the lyrics of the eponymous 1940s musical hit. Ages 3-up. (Jan.)

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen

This song, originally written in 1948, is given new life with pastel watercolors. Each page of the book features a letter of the alphabet adorned with children and the accompanying verse from the song. Young toddlers will love to have the book "sung" to them. Older children will recognize the letters but the illustrations and lyrics don't always clearly associate the letters with their use in words.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

This song has been around for fifty years and it is still a delight. Martha Alexander has created lovely watercolor pictures for each letter in this alphabet tour. They are filled with cute kids involved in lots of activities. This board book version of her earlier picture book offers a pleasant approach to learning the ABCs.

A you're adorable , B you're so beautiful , C you're a cutie full of charms . . . Using the 1940s song by Buddy Kaye, Fred Wise, and Sidney Lippman, Alexander has created a charming ABC song book that features her signature sweet-faced children, drawn in softly colored pastel watercolors, scampering about the crisp capital letters that the song uses to celebrate what you mean to me! For those familiar with this song popularized by Perry Como (and for those who are not, the sheet music is included on the endpapers), it will be difficult not to sing along, but the lyrics can be read aloud by the musically challenged. Offering a lovely and lyrical alternative to the standard ABC song, this will be a pleasant addition to alphabet-book collections.
