Overview

The ABC of One to Seven is a practical guide to the management of common physical and emotional problems of early childhood. New chapters include the prevention and management of obesity, behavioural and emotional problems, ADHD, autism, the child with fever, and changes in access to medical and social services.

Including the latest NICE guidelines and advice on when to refer and how to manage the problem afterwards, each chapter provides relevant websites and resources for health workers.

The ABC of One to Seven and the companion book, ABC of the First Year, have become standard guides for general practitioners, trainee doctors, medical students, midwives, nurses and health visitors. They are indispensible reference books for family doctor surgeries, emergency and outpatient departments, wards and libraries.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Robert Roskin, MD(University of Washington/CHRMC)
Description:This is a revised version of a British topic-based, practical guide to general pediatrics covering ages one to seven, written for the non-pediatric healthcare provider. The prior edition was published in 1993.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a practical guide to the physical, emotional, and developmental diseases of early childhood. Included in this edition are updates on new treatments and diagnoses, as well as revised chapters on dermatology, the severely ill child, vomiting and diarrhea, and ambulatory care.
Audience:In my opinion, this text is useful for not only trainees but also other non-physicians such as nurses who spend time with children. However, I feel it is too brief to be a useful resource for family physicians who spend significant time with pediatric patients. In addition, the extensive sections on social services are specific to Britain and not useful to U.S. practitioners.
Features:This book contains a review of many of the major ambulatory pediatric problems of early childhood as well as some developmental issues and social service problems. There are concise, practical guides for evaluation and treatment. For many topics, there is an easy to read format with history, investigation, and management. The color pictures add significantly to the dermatology section. The table of contents and organization of chapters seem a bit haphazard, without a clear order of presentation. There are no references, which would be useful even for such a practical guide. A section on minor trauma would also be useful.
Assessment:This is a concise, useful source of general information about common ambulatory pediatric problems, particularly for students and practitioners who spend only a limited time seeing children.
