Synopsis

The moral and philosophical foundations for abortion are explored in 25 articles reproduced from medical and political journals published between 1971 and 2002. They consider the nature of prenatal life, international perspectives on the regulation of abortion, the role of health professionals as providers of abortion services, and the impact of the new genetics on abortion rights and discourses. The earliest article is a defense of abortion by Judith Jarvis Thomson in Philosophy and Public Affairs; John Finnis' reply in the same journal two years later follows. Other topics include the criminal sanction as it relates to human reproduction, the need for more physicians trained in abortion, and prenatal diagnosis and selective abortion. Only names are indexed. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
