It is inspiring to read about a man who has gone from very humble beginnings to being the most powerful man in the land, but what is truly remarkable about Abraham Lincoln is that he was always very modest about his achievements. The author of this book has allowed Lincoln to speak for himself using quotations of his own words. These tell us a great deal about the man and how simple and unaffected he was. Filling these quotations out are stories about the younger Lincoln; it is from these stories that we can learn what experiences made Lincoln the great man who became the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was clearly an enterprising young man, going on a big adventure when he was just nineteen years old. With only other person with him, Lincoln went down the Mississippi on a flatboat to New Orleans. It was this first sight of a big city which gave Lincoln the idea that he wanted to do more with his life than to just remain on the frontier. There was a big world out there that he wanted to be a part of. This book also tells us that Lincoln's family was very strongly anti-slavery on moral grounds and it is perhaps because of this background that Lincoln felt so opposed to the institution of slavery. What this book does not mention was that although Lincoln believed absolutely that "all men are created equal" in the eyes of the law, he did still have some, what today would be seen as racist views, towards people of color. With a wonderful selection of full color photographs and illustrations this is an admirable book for any library or school collection. In the back of the book the reader will find a chronology, glossary, a list of books for further reading, a list of Internetresources, and an index.
