Synopsis

Writing a research paper is like being a detective. Step by step, this book will show you how to plan, write, and polish your paper. Soon you'll be an expert on any topic you want-from sharks and armadillos to stars and planets!

Children's Literature

Writing their first research paper can be a daunting task for young students. This book will give them the tools they need to make it less so. Part of the "Ace It! Information Literacy Series" from Enslow Publishers, it shows young researchers how to break the process into manageable steps in order to plan, write, and polish a paper into a stellar presentation. Gaines starts with a short discussion of what research papers are and why teachers assign them, then moves very quickly into the writing process. Each step is presented in its own chapter, starting with understanding the assignment, then moving into focusing in on a topic, doing research, making an outline, draft and revision, and finally peer review and the finished product. The format is very kid friendly, providing not only what to do but more importantly, why. Knowing that students learn in different ways, she also offers several different methods of organizing the paper, from the basic outline using numbers and letters to a mind map, to laying out note cards so the information tells a story. Sidebars abound and include such things as overcoming procrastination, online safety, avoiding plagiarism, and overcoming writer's block. Full color photographs and drawings illustrating ideas, a glossary, chapter notes, suggestions for further reading both in print and on the Internet, and comprehensive index, round out the presentation. Although written for the young researcher, the process presented is one that can be used by all ages. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
