Synopsis

This book aims to guide medical staff through the challenging area of medical emergencies, using the Airway, Breathing, Circulation approach to patient assessment and resuscitation. It can be used for background reading, to prepare for dealing with critically ill patients, or as a guide to initial assessment and management for medical staff faced with an unfamiliar pattern. It covers the whole breadth of medical emergencies from cardiac arrest and the management of shock to specific sections on metabolic, cardiac, gastrointestinal, and other emergencies. It also contains sections discussing practical procedures, the indications for admissions to an ITU, safe inter-or intrahospital transfers, and dealing with recently bereaved relatives. Acute medical emergencies provides a practical approach to ill patients in whom the diagnosis is uncertain, a problem often not well covered in large medical texts.

Bonnie Salomon

This handbook is designed to provide a quick and convenient reference for common medical emergencies. Its focus is on the initial evaluation and resuscitation of critically ill patients in whom the diagnosis is unknown. "The authors aim to introduce management principles of emergency cases in a succinct format. Many books in emergency medicine also cover the same topics. However, the authors cover unusual aspects of care that are practical and useful in the everyday: bereaved families, transfers, and indications for ICU admission. Each chapter briefly, but successfully, hits on the main points of treatment. "The audience, according to the authors, is housestaff faced with diagnostic uncertainty. Medical students and junior residents are probably the best audience. Senior residents and attendings will find the chapters merely cursory. "The first part of the book deals with the basic ABC approach to the unstable patient. Subsequent chapters deal with basic emergency disorders, such as GI bleeding or headache. The strength of the chapters is the clear delineation of history, physical, assessment, labs, and finally, treatment and disposition. Key points are set aside in boxed text. "For those just starting their practice of emergency medicine, the short chapters and direct graphics will be a useful introduction. The brevity of the chapters will probably leave experienced emergency physicians wanting more.
