Description: This book explores the various facets of acute toxicity testing. Numerous examples of data are provided, and the chapters are generally well written. This is the second edition, and the first edition was published in 1988.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide practical and useful information for the design, conduct, and interpretation of acute toxicity testing. These objectives are worthy, but the actual need for acute toxicity testing has diminished over the last ten years.
Audience: This book is written for practicing toxicologists, according to the authors and to this reviewer. Both authors are well respected and credible authorities on acute toxicity testing.
Features: The theory behind acute toxicity testing in multiple species is discussed. This includes lethality testing, dermal and ocular irritation testing, and photosensitization testing. Considerable information is also provided regarding statistical analyses, variables such as vehicles and formulations, and regulatory guidelines. The chapters are generally well written; however, there are numerous spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book. In addition, some illustrations are placed in the wrong chapter.
Assessment: This book will be useful to toxicologists who are either unfamiliar with or have cursory knowledge of acute toxicity testing. The well written chapters are significant in detail, although spelling/grammatical errors were often found. The breadth and depth of this book will make it an excellent addition to any toxicologist's book collection.
