Overview
Acute toxicology testing provides the first line of defense against potentially dangerous chemicals. This book is a complete and practical guide to conducting and interpreting all regulatory required and commonly used acute toxicity tests. It presents detailed protocols for all of the common test designs and reviews their development and objectives. Acute Toxicology Testing, Second Edition will interest not only workers in the pharmaceutical industry, but also researchers and students in toxicology and public health.Key Features:
β’ Over 100 tables summarizing and interpreting results
β’ Complete coverage of all major test designs and their limitations and advantages
β’ Current status of alternative test designs and models
The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Barry S. Levine, DSc(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This book explores the various facets of acute toxicity testing. Numerous examples of data are provided, and the chapters are generally well written. This is the second edition, and the first edition was published in 1988.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide practical and useful information for the design, conduct, and interpretation of acute toxicity testing. These objectives are worthy, but the actual need for acute toxicity testing has diminished over the last ten years.
Audience: This book is written for practicing toxicologists, according to the authors and to this reviewer. Both authors are well respected and credible authorities on acute toxicity testing.
Features: The theory behind acute toxicity testing in multiple species is discussed. This includes lethality testing, dermal and ocular irritation testing, and photosensitization testing. Considerable information is also provided regarding statistical analyses, variables such as vehicles and formulations, and regulatory guidelines. The chapters are generally well written; however, there are numerous spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book. In addition, some illustrations are placed in the wrong chapter.
Assessment: This book will be useful to toxicologists who are either unfamiliar with or have cursory knowledge of acute toxicity testing. The well written chapters are significant in detail, although spelling/grammatical errors were often found. The breadth and depth of this book will make it an excellent addition to any toxicologist's book collection.

A complete and practical reference for conducting and interpreting regulatory-required and generally used acute toxicity tests. Presented and reviewed are, among other topics, considerations for the formulation and selections of vehicles or dosage form; characteristics of the eight most commonly used laboratory animal species and the rationale for model selection; and, basic principles and methods of statistics and experimental design. This second edition presents detailed protocols for all of the common test formulas and analyzes their development and objectives. Useful for clinicians in the pharmaceutical industry, but also of interest to researchers and students in toxicology and public health.
