Description: This eighth edition of this well-written standard textbook of neurology improves upon previous editions (last in 2001) by including several significant changes in the field of neurology, particularly treatments.
Purpose: The objective of the authors is to provide the field with a textbook that includes the phenomenology of neurological diseases and a disciplined presentation of clinical data. This book meets these objectives, providing readers with a reference for both clinical and training purposes.
Audience: The book is well suited for any professional in the field of neurologic disorders, especially those in training, in clinical practice, and educators. With their judicious review of each current topic, the authors provide insights into a variety of aspects one must consider in this specialty.
Features: Prior editions of this book are likely well known to readers who have studied in the field. The early chapters cover neurologic disease manifestations and phenomenology. Later chapters discuss specific diseases and disorders. Particularly good information can be found on neuromuscular diseases, encephalopathic disorders, disorders of the senses, and nervous system toxins. The exceptionally well-written text lessens the need for pictures and artwork, but these would be welcomed in the next edition. The book may need to be printed in two volumes.
Assessment: Principles of Neurology is well known to generations of neurologists. Drs. Ropper and Brown have managed to refresh the contents, making this edition as exciting to me as when I opened my first copy in 1993. It is a particularly helpful resource for those learning neurology for the first time, or for those wishing to review fundamentals and the most current balanced thinking in this field.
