School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-- After an introductory overview of the history, causes, and effects of addiction, Berger divides her presentation into two main parts. The first section devotes a chapter to each major drug class, e.g., narcotic, depressant, stimulant, and hallucinogenic drugs, as well as marijuana and hashish. All begin with brief fictionalized portraits of abusers drawn from all walks of life, and then go on to describe the symptoms and problems associated with a particular substance. The second section, presented in a similar format, deals with inhalants, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, and, surprisingly, food addiction. Basing the text on numerous, well-documented, up-to-date sources, the author again proves that scientific material can be presented in a readable form. Her book is distinguished by its thorough coverage of the topic, skillful presentation of technical material, and clear writing style. Addiction will find many uses in all types of libraries serving young adults. Although there are othermany good books available on drugs, this one is among the best. --Sue A. While much of the text is unchanged from the original, 1982 edition, the book now includes pertinent information about developments such as the upsurge in the use of crack cocaine and the risk of AIDS among drug users. In addition, the revised edition includes source notes and an updated list of organizations to contact for further information on various kinds of addiction. A timely revision of a useful resource.
