Overview

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is now recognized as one of the most common causes of learning and behavioural difficulties in school-aged children. Symptoms may include poor concentration, forgetfulness, poor organization, impulsivity, restlessness, poor social skills, learning difficulties, low self-esteem, and defiant behavior. Despite growing awareness of ADHD among parents and health professionals, it is still widely misunderstood.

This second edition of ADHD: The Facts provides information on how ADHD is diagnosed, on conventional medical and alternative therapies, and on ways of helping children to improve their own behaviour, self-esteem, and academic results. Written by an experienced pediatrician, this book features practical advice to help parents understand their child's difficulties and how to overcome them. With detailed explanations of the cause of ADHD, its nature, and the treatments of the condition that have proved effective over time, this new edition includes developments in the understanding of conditions that often co-exist with it, as well as the problems experienced by adults with ADHD.

ADHD: The Facts will be of invaluable assistance to parents of children with ADHD and to teachers, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and doctors wanting an authoritative, up-to-date, and practical review of the condition.

Reviewer: Gary P. Dupuy, M.D., Doctor of Pharmacy (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This text is a detailed description of ADHD including a description of co-morbid issues, sequelae of this condition, and therapeutic approaches.
Purpose: This book is written for any interested reader, including doctors, teachers, parents, therapists. It is intended and succeeds in providing insight to the cause and effect of ADHD from multiple perspectives of the patient, parent, teacher, friends and family. It particularly seeks to overcome misconceptions and perceptions related to ADHD.
Audience: This book is intended to educate any interested party about ADHD. Both medical and non-medical persons will find it easy to understand. It is a very informative work written by a developmental pediatrician.
Features: Many chapters begin with case examples, then progress into further discussions rincluding a general overview of ADHD, categorization of ADHD, features of various types, co-morbid characteristics, diagnosis, and multimodal approaches to therapy.
Assessment: This book is easy to read, follow and understand. The case examples and discussions are a bit lengthy. In particular, redundancy is a problem. For example, issues mentioned in the beginning and discussed satisfactorily are then re-addressed in even further detail later. The educational experience is not really enhanced; it simply becomes mundane to the reader.
