This book is a very good source of practical information for persons in the leadership roles of case management and utilization management, including the basic building blocks of program development, enhancement and evaluation in the areas of disease management, and quality improvement. This is a theoretical, research, and statistical overview of disease management, outcome management, and process improvement. The author promotes the need for program development and the importance of measuring outcomes. This publication could be used as a reference for staff in the areas of utilization management, case management, and quality assurance in both the insurance and clinical setting. Management personnel would benefit from the structure of program development. Strategies to integrate disease management, continuous quality improvement, outcomes, and complementary and alternative medicine are discussed in detail. Practical frameworks and current industry standards of program development are outlined nicely. The extensive information on CAM might be better addressed in a separate book or condensed article. The information provided in this book is very good and the step-by-step directions would be useful and informative in program development. The information on complementary and alternative medicine is very comprehensive and enhances awareness of the need for integration of these services with Western medicine.
