Synopsis

The Monte Carlo random sampling method has been used for more than 30 years to solve problems in radiation transport arising in radiation shields, nuclear reactors, medical equipment and other technological applications. The success of the method stems from its wide application field and accuracy in modelling and flexibility, but widespread implementation has been limited primarily by intensive computation and use by experts. New computer architectures realized in vector and parallel machines, for example, are eliminating computer power shortage. The development of user-friendly, intelligent procedures is facilitating use by non-specialists. This publication records the proceedings of a group of experts who gathered to discuss the most recent developments, exchange their experience, and suggest further work to improve the modelling computer codes.
