Gr 6-9--A brief forward outlines African-American history, followed by chapters of questions, then answers, on topics such as "Origins," "Arrival in America," and "Economic Life." The introduction states that the format is designed to arouse curiosity, provide a model for inquiry methods, and supply factual information. However, the usefulness of this volume is limited as it trivializes wide areas of study. Because all of the questions come first, readers must constantly flip to the back half of the book to locate the brief answers. Black-and-white photos and reproductions are found throughout. The "Cultures of America" series (Benchmark) is a better choice for ethnic studies; it is attractively laid out and offers more than a sound-bite approach to research.--Janet Woodward, Garfield High School, Seattle, WABook Details
