The intent of this reference is to serve as a starting point for research related to two kinds of "firsts" by African Americans in the sciences. These "firsts" include fundamental scientific contributions made by African Americans, as well as individuals who made the first steps in what had been exclusively white domains. Some 1,200 entries are arranged chronologically within eight subjects: agriculture and everyday life, allied health, dentistry and nursing, life sciences, math and engineering, medicine, physical sciences, and transportation. Entries range from 50 to 150 words and include a description of the accomplishment, a brief biography of the individuals involved, sources of additional information, and, often, a photo. Indexed by name and subject, as well as by year and by occupation. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
