Overview

This series of historical accounts profiles strong women who took extraordinary measures to achieve and maintain power—including murder, deception, and black magic—examining the women’s reputations in the context of their eras. Just how wicked were they? The books allow readers to decide for themselves if these infamous ladies were indeed heartless and evil or simply out of touch and making the most of their circumstances.

The true account of an empress that was loved, feared, deified, and hated is presented in this illustrated narrative, detailing the life and sovereignty of Agrippina. An ambitious Roman, Agrippina murdered and married her way to the throne and to being declared a goddess, making many enemies along the way—including her own son. With details about how she came to power, lived, and died, this resource also includes information about ancient Roman society.

Synopsis

Ambitious Roman empress Agrippina murdered and married her way to the throne--and to being declared a goddess. She made many enemies, including her own son. But was she really all that atrocious?

Gorgeous illustrations and an intelligent, evocative story bring to life a real dastardly dame whose lust for power lost her the love of her people, and eventually, her life.

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young

Many of us have heard the familiar phrase: "Nero fiddled while Rome burned," but relatively few of us have heard of Nero's mother, the Roman empress Agrippina. What are her credentials for inclusion in the "Thinking Girls Treasury of Dastardly Dames" series? Murder. Banishment for treason. Lust for power. Jealousy. Agrippina even married her uncle for control of the Roman Empire. Join Bridges as she presents this lesser-known woman in an easily read work allowing for greater understanding of this era, as well as of people in first century Rome. Malone's illustrations serve as embellishments for the text, enhancing this biographical account, and creating the proper ambiance for a woman of flawed character. If there are any distractions in this work, it is that there may be too many diversions for readers, making it at times easy to interrupt the flow of Agrippina's life story. While this may attract those with short attention spans, it could disrupt readers needing a seamless, fluid presentation. Overall, as with others in this series, this will be a welcome addition to school and public libraries, especially since Agrippina does not have the same "fan-base" of other women in history.
