School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Adequately covering these enormous topics in just 48 pages is next to impossible. Beginning with identical six-page introductions, the texts are divided into one- to two-page chapters. Monochromatic photos on the cover are inviting, and vintage black-and-white photos appear throughout. Vocabulary is appropriate, but phrases such as "Here are-" and "Here is-" when introducing a list of items or people become annoying. At times, the author assumes readers have adequate geographical knowledge, which may not be the case for this audience. The only map in either volume is in the introduction, and it has so many similar colors that it is hard to use.
