Overview

Most living things on our planet need air, or oxygen, to survive. Humans take in air with their lungs. Insects absorb air through holes called spiracles. Fish breathe through their gills. Plants use pores in their leaves to get oxygen. But our planet's air is changing. It now holds chemicals that hurt our lungs and slow plant growth. Things in the air can even eat away at the stone on buildings. Air explains the dangers posed by two main air problems—pollution and acid rain. Using international examples, the book will help us understand how and why these hazards formed. It will also show what is being done—in our own neighborhoods and throughout the world—to restore air quality.
