Synopsis

Whether he is remembered as the architect of a vast empire, a blood-thirsty conqueror, or the creator of the Hellenistic Age, Alexander the Great maintains his role as one of history's greatest leaders. Crowned king of Macedonia at the age of twenty, and already a seasoned soldier, Alexander took command of the armies of Macedonia and Greece and hurled their might at the Persian Empire. Author Tom McGowen explores the life of Alexander the Great, from his first battle at the age of sixteen and his innovations in the ways of war to his incredible victories and the defeat of the Persian Empire.

Gr 5-8-Beginning with a pivotal event that is described in a lively fashion, the texts then take readers back to the subjects' birth, childhood, education, and rise to power. Quotes from ancient historians provide valuable insight into the men's personalities. A glimpse into the culture of the period gives additional background and information. McGowen opens with Alexander's attack on the city of Multan in his quest to conquer India. A person of great ambition, Alexander hoped to unite all the people of the known world under his rule. Warrick first describes Hannibal crossing the Alps with his elephants and then chronicles the steps leading to the attack on Rome. Both books describe battles and strategies in great detail. Insets, a few small black-and-white illustrations, and maps provide additional information. These books are useful for reports and for pleasure reading.-Lana Miles, Duchesne Academy, Houston, TX Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
