Synopsis

Discusses the history, equipment, and techniques of football and includes a summary of the rules.

School Library Journal

Gr 5-7 A generally clear if somewhat dry introduction to the game of foot ball. The basic rules are presented first, with differences between NFL rules, college rules, and Canadian rules noted. This is followed by a brief history of the sport, with frequent ref erence to the impact that television has had on the game. The final section deals with some of the great players, taking a New York Times/ CBS poll of fans' ``favorites'' as the key to inclu sion here. The clean format, relatively large typeface, and liberal sprinkling of action photographs will appeal to browsers. In some places there is not enough clarification to insure compre hension. For example, at one point Sullivan indicates that tackles are ac tually blockers, and are not allowed to do any tackling. The difference be tween blocking and tackling is not ex plained, however, and the terms do not appear in the glossary. This is not a substitute for Dave Anderson's ex cellent The Story of Football (Morrow, 1985), but it is certainly an acceptable choice for collections needing addi tional reading for young football fans.
