Publishers Weekly

For sing-along fans, it's karaoke on wheels in David Schiller's All-American Car-I-Oke. This paper-over-board kit includes a CD with the music (no vocals), a spiral-bound book of lyrics, activities and trivia, as well as three booklets with the words for backseat singers who want to join in. The family-friendly selections are fun to sing, from "Proud Mary" (for which the book also includes choreography-"Dancing with your seat belt on") to "Give My Regards to Broadway." A "Gospel Sing-Along" section includes "Amazing Grace," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "hand jive" movements for "Rise and Shine [...and give God the glory, glory]." Children's Literature

A book with lyrics, suggestions for singing along, background on the fifteen songs (and a few extras), a CD with accompaniment—what more could you want for an in-car family sing-along? The only drawback is that if you don't already know the songs, you can't join in. Since there is no written music included, Mom or Dad will have to know the melodies so they can lead or perhaps teach the songs to the kids before the trip. If neither Mom nor Dad is a singer, the only recourse is to turn to CDs or old records for some research. But, assuming a musical family, car-i-oke could be fun. The lyrics offered range from gospel to folk, Broadway to patriotic, blues to Caribbean. Vocal cues on the CD help to keep singers on track most of the time, with the occasional diversion of an instrumental solo from fiddle, guitar, or pennywhistle. Tips on movement to the songs, historical notes, and even a drum-along, "Backseat Boogie-Woogie," give the family (or any group traveling together) a chance to relieve the trip's monotony with some musical action. The spiral-bound volume is conveniently packaged with the CD and three copies of lyrics-only in a plastic pouch at the front. The kids in the goofy black-and-white illustrations all seem to be having a great time. If backseat singing is your family's thing, you can join in, too. 2003, Workman, Ages 11 up.
