Children's Literature

This book has an old-fashioned feel about itβ€”in the simple and straightforward way information is given. "There are many different kinds of farms. Some farms grow grains," reads the caption on the first page, under a photo of wheat. "This rice farm is called a paddy. Rice is a grain," says the next page. Colorful photographs show farms growing corn, cherries, oranges, tomatoes, pineapples, bananas, potatoes, and other crops; farm workers are shown in the fields, paddys, and bogs. Each page has one to three sentences in a plain type, using a small vocabulary well-suited to early readers. It includes a short glossary/index. Young children who are starting to be interested in where their food comes from will find this interesting. It would work well for a class on farming or gardening, or before a field trip to a pumpkin patch. 2004, Yellow Umbrella Books/Capstone Press, Ages 2 to 6.
