Overview

Of all the holidays, Valentine's Day is the one that most calls for a do-it-yourself approach. Kids traditionally get out the scissors and glue and work some creative magic with red construction paper and lace doilies. But Valentine's Day crafts can go far beyond the handmade card. Here Kathy Ross, America's crafts-for-kids expert, shares some very new and very original ideas for the holiday. There are, of course, several ideas for valentine cards -- for example, a Party Blower Valentine where your message is displayed in a very unusual way, or a Button Nose Valentine that the recipient can actually wear. But valentine wishes don't necessarily have to take the form of a card. A Hearts and Buttons Bouquet would make a welcome gift for Mom, Valentine Bookmarks would delight your classmates, and a Rubber Band Valentine Bracelet would be a thoughtful gift for a special friend. Card holders, jewelry, and even a wind chime are among the many imaginative ways you can express the spirit of Valentine's Day by making something unique for the special people in your life.

Provides instructions for creating a variety of Valentine's Day crafts, including cards, bookmarks, bracelets, Valentine holders, magnets, and more.

Gr 1-3-Colorful, child-friendly, watercolor paintings take readers step-by-step through 20 easy crafts. The materials needed are easy to find and are shown at the beginning of each spread. Most projects involve cutting and gluing. Some also require simple drawing and hand lettering a message. None of the activities appear in Ross's Crafts for Valentine's Day (Millbrook, 1995). This book is not quite as attractive as the author's Crafts to Make in the Winter (Millbrook, 1999), but it does have an artistic, child-focused approach that's missing in Sharon Dunn Umnik's 175 Easy-to-Do Valentine Crafts (Boyds Mills, 2002) and Sheri Brownrigg's Hearts and Crafts (Tricycle, 1995; o.p.). Children looking for new ideas need look no further.-Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
