From The Critics
Reviewer: Christopher J. Young, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)Description: This book uses a problem-oriented approach that covers the entire perioperative care of ambulatory surgery patients. The focus of the book extends to include new and more complex procedures, complex disease processes, and the areas of cost containment, practice management, and risk management.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, nondogmatic, and practical information source on the latest anesthetic and medical management strategies for the emerging field of ambulatory surgery; the objectives are well met.
Audience: The audience is meant to include anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, residents, and nurses-in-training as well as other physicians and healthcare professionals. Although the value for practitioners other than anesthesiologists may be less, the book is successful in this regard. The authors in general are among the most prominent names in the field and are very credible authorities.
Features: Although the illustration quality varies among the chapters, the illustrations are clear and helpful; some sections of the text might be enhanced by more illustrations. The chapters are well referenced with current and pertinent chapters and are supported by a thorough index and table of contents.
Assessment: This ambulatory surgery text fills a gap in the available reference sources. The problem-oriented approach and comprehensive topic list make for an easy-to-read, well-referenced textbook that covers a broad and rapidly expanding field of anesthesia and surgery.
