Mr. Rogers, Amelia's neighbor, urges her to enter a local baking contest sponsored by a famous television chef. Amelia is interested but she has to decline. Grace, who runs a bakery called "Grace's Cookie Jar," is taking the day off, and she has asked Amelia and her cousin Alcolu to run the bakery for her. Amelia is afraid that she will be too tired at the end of the day to make a cake for the contest, and she is right. Amelia and Alcolu work hard at the bakery and manage to come up with a strange assortment of desserts which includes cookies with the chocolate chips cut in half, twelve pound cakes stacked on top of one another, and a crumb cake made of nothing but crumbs. Finally, there is one last cake to be made, but Amelia is so tired she decides to bake it at home. Grace tells her to meet her, with the cake, at the big Bake-Off the next day. When the chef sees Amelia's cake, he awards her the grand prize. This is another installment of the "Amelia Bedelia" series, first created by Peggy Parish and now carried on by her nephew, Herman Parish. Fans of the series won't be disappointed in this new book, which is full of delightful word puns and plays, and, of course, its trademark humor.
