Library Journal

This book is one photographer's vision of America--coast to coast. Rajs's photographs have appeared in National Geographic books, Life , Omni , etc., making this book seem familiar, if not in specific shots, then in its point of view. Divided into subject categories of wilderness, farms and towns, shorelines, roadways, and cities, it is dominated by places rather than people. The look of America, with its regional variety, is its strength. A foreword by James A. Michener, which gives a homey and enthusiastic portrayal of the nation, is loosely tied to Rajs's photographs but adds little to the book. There is great beauty in many of Rajs's images, particularly when topography and nature motivated his camera eye. Regrettably, however, the overall effect of this big, lush, national panorama is that we have seen much of it before in magazines, corporate reports, and advertising. Though it might be an impressive gift, America adds little to library collections. Not recommended.--David Bryant, Belleville P.L., N.J.
