Children's Literature - Kristina Cassidy

This simple board book contains only a single sentence about how babies around the nation explore their worlds and inspire others. The real stars of this book, however, are the babies photographed on each page. Infants love to stare at pictures of other babies, and they will find plenty to interest them here. The photos show babies of many races and ethnicities in varied settings. Some photos are close-ups, while others allow readers to see the baby's environment. Photos show settings both indoors and out, and the outdoor settings cover different seasons as well. While most of the babies are smiling, there is one who has just finished crying, one who is eating, and two who are neither smiling nor frowning. Parents, librarians, and daycare providers will find this sturdy board book a worthy addition to their libraries. Proceeds from book sales benefit the Global Fund for Children. Kirkus Reviews

Photographs of adorable babies (is there any other kind?) of varying ethnicities appear in both full-page and panel insets to a very brief (one sentence), vaguely patriotic text. With just one phrase per spread, there's little to distract from the main attractions. One overall-clad lad sits in a field of golden grain, another tyke crawls across the sand ("from sea to shining sea"), a little girl intently scans a board book and yet another smiles coyly over her mother's shoulder. The dark-skinned, utterly toothless boy crowing with delight ("spreading joy") is worth the price of admission all by himself. As babies never seem to grow tired of looking at other babies, this glowing celebration seems to be a surefire hit. A portion of the proceeds benefits The Global Fund for Children. (Board book. 0-1)
