Synopsis
American bison have lived on the North American continent for 10,000 years, but as hunting techniques changed, these symbols of the American West nearly became extinct. By the mid-1800s, the millions of American bison that once stampeded across the plains had been reduced to only a thousand animals. While today there are still very few free-ranging bison, regulation and conservation efforts helped to protect this amazing species. Bison can reach more than 6 feet in height and weigh up to 2,000 pounds, making them the largest land mammal in North America. Gr 3-6-- An attractive introduction to the life cycle of this beast, beautifully illustrated throughout with excellent full-color photographs. An opening explanation carefully delineates the distinction between the bison and thebuffalo. In addition to providing information about the animal's habits, the book also presents its role in U. S. history. Conservation efforts to save it from extinction are emphasized; a thorough glossary and index will aid researchers. Jack Denton Scott's Return of the Buffalo (Putnam, 1976) contains the same fundamental information, but is illustrated with black-and-white photos. The Bison (Crestwood, 1985) by Carl R. Green and William R. Sanford has more detailed information and is better suited for assignments, but it is not as attractive as this book. --Barbara B.
