Aspen Policy Books is a series of brief books devoted to developing new thinking on U.S. national security, cooperative measures to reduce conflict, and international polices of the United States from national defense strategy to issues of international political economy. The books are collections of "memos to the president" on one of these selected global policy issues.
American Military Strategy is organized around four topics: "Security Strategy and Military Missions," "Alliances, Coalitions, and Polyglot Peacekeepers," "The Promise and Perils of the Revolution in Military Affairs," and "The WMD Problem: Offense and Defense." Each topic begins with a list of questions for discussion, is followed by a series of policy memos by guest experts, and concludes with a summary of the discussion on that topic.

Commission. He is the White Burkett Miller Professor of History at the University of Virginia.
Present and former policy makers, brought together in August 2000 by the Aspen Study Group, a program of the Aspen Institute, report on American military strategy in a format designed to resemble policy discussions at the presidential retreat, Camp David. Material is organized around the four topics of security strategy and military missions; alliances, coalitions, and polyglot peacekeepers; promises and perils of the revolution in military affairs; and problems of weapons of mass destruction. Some contributors are affiliated with organizations including the National Security Study Group, RAND Europe, and the United Nations. Others are former and current members of government and the military. Zelikow teaches history at the University of Virginia and directs the Miller Center of Public Affairs. He was formerly a White House official and diplomat. This work lacks a subject index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
