America's national parks are the focus of this outstanding photography collection by five-time World Press Prize winner Bourseiller (365 Ways To Save the Earth). The book is made up almost entirely of color images, the majority of which are two-page spreads. The visual presentation conveys the beauty, vastness, glory, harshness, and intrigue that can be found in 54 of our country's parks. Bourseiller has captured more than traditional picture-postcard images-e.g., one shot focuses on the bottom of an uprooted tree, and another features a vertical rock face in a Wyoming park. The captions are in a separate section at the back, which allows for an unobstructed view of the photographs, but readers must flip back and forth to identify what they are viewing. Three essays by nature and environmental writers discuss the history and politics of U.S. national parks; one essay compares our parks to those in other regions such as Africa, Europe, and Latin America. This volume is designed for browsing in the library or for home collections; its weight would deter users from signing it out and carrying it home.
