Library Journal

This guide focuses on Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the center of Amish culture in America. The author, a Lancaster resident, also covers nearby areas and attractions. There is a brief introduction to the Amish, but a bibliography would have been even more helpful, since there is so much misunderstanding about the Amish and Mennonites. A chapter on visitor's etiquette is sensitive and should help reduce the intrusive impact of tourists in the area. The guide thoroughly presents the usual subjects: motels, restaurants, entertainment, tours, and shopping. There are sections on self-guided tours and bicycling. This useful guide to an interesting area is recommended for travel collections. (Photographs and maps not seen.)-- George M. Jenks, Bucknell Univ., Lewisburg, Pa.
