Overview

Colin Thubron decided he wanted to travel as freely as possible in Russia. So he learned Russian before entering the Soviet Union and went there in an old car. He drove nearly 10,000 miles between the Baltic and the Caucasus, camping out most of the way.

Everywhere he went he listened to people of all ages, occupations and interests. He met dissidents and was eventually dogged by the KGB. The result is a revealing picture of the many races who inhabit a great country, for it is the human side Thubron captures in this book.

"The results are glorious. A subtle and humane writer, Thubron captures the fleeting words and gestures that define a culture...offers a harvest of insights that would be the envy of any sociologist." (The New York Times)

About the Author, Colin Thubron

Colin Thubron is an acknowledged master of travel writing. His first books were about the Middle Eastβ€”Damascus, Lebanon, and Cyprus. In 1982 he traveled in the Soviet Union, pursued by the KGB. From these early experiences developed his great travel books on the landmass that makes up Russia and Asia: Among the Russians; Behind the Wall: A Journey through China; The Lost Heart of Asia; In Siberia; and most recently, Shadow of the Silk Road.

Colin Thubron is an award-winning novelist as well as, arguably, the most admired travel writer of our time. He lives in London.
