One of a nine part series, this guide is divided into four sections. The first two provide general background information about amphibians, the third is the field guide, and the final is a reference section. Of the almost 5,000 species of amphibians, only 250 live in the United States and Canada. Most live in tropical areas. The classification of all animals, and specifically amphibians, is based on shared characteristics. Amphibians are primarily frogs and salamanders. Salamanders are not as common as frogs. The frog order is divided into families, some called frogs, and some called toads. The general background section provides a wide range of information covering every aspect of the life and environment of such amphibians, accompanied by an extensive collection of photographs. The field guide features 50 common North American amphibians with a large photo and information about each one's size and habitat range. Information is also included about other amphibians with similar characteristics. A small format and special reinforced paper binding make it a durable publication for use on expeditions. 1999, Scholastic, Ages 6 to Adult, $17.95 and $8.95. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
