Overview

A is for ant, B is for bandicoot, C is for cockatoo, D is for dingo, E is for echidna . . . An Australian ABC of Animals, a lavishly illustrated alphabet book by well-known Aboriginal artist Bronwyn Bancroft, is a must-have for every home and library. The book is both a delightful introduction to the alphabet, and a unique exploration of Australian wildlife—some familiar, others more unusual—as seen through the eyes of an indigenous artist. Animals include: kangaroo, bandicoot, wombat, echidna, cockatoo, frog and goanna—and many more.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Yes, there is a lesson presented—learning the alphabet, but in this case young ones also learn about Australia. The art all has an aboriginal flavor and some of the stylized illustrations may make it harder for kids to recognize the item that accompanies each letter. Fortunately, the text is there to help adults as well as kids. No "A" for apple, but "A" for ant "B" for bandicoot and "E" for echidna. The animals vary in size and some share a page like the night hawk and owl. Others like the turtle and wombat have a page to themselves. The only letter that does not represent an animal is "X" It is an interesting, but very specialized board book. A companion book to An Australian 1, 2, 3 of Animals. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
