From The Critics
Reviewer: Michael Y Matsumoto, DDS(University of Chicago Medical Center)Description: This is the first of five volumes on oral health and it serves as introduction to the succeeding volumes, which go into further detail on specific topics.
Purpose: The aim is to provide an overview of current and future trends in oral healthcare resources, diagnosis, risk prediction, prevention, and non-aggressive treatment of dental caries and periodontal disease.
Audience: This book is written for dentists and dental hygienists, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. In my opinion it would also serve as a useful reference to those involved in public health.
Features: The author provides excellent coverage of attitudes towards maintenance of teeth on a global perspective. The supplements will, with the use of graphics, depict trends in prevalence of plaque and caries formation and treatment. Chapter 6 on plaque control is an excellent review of the various methods and instruments used for professional mechanical tooth cleaning (PMTC) and the long-term results of routine maintenance and prevention.
Assessment: Understanding risk factors and prevalence of disease are the foundations of preventative care. I find that this book provides an excellent foundation by documenting risk factors, treatment, and follow-up. The techniques used in PMTC provide good references for hygienists and dentists and can also be used for patient education.
