This book attempts to answer questions and provide information on the use and abuse of anabolic steroids in sports. The book is divided into three parts: history and incidence; effects, dependence, and treatment; and testing and societal alternatives. This book's purpose is to provide the reader with a comprehensive, accurate, and objective discussion of anabolic steroid use in sport. Dr. Yesalis makes every effort for this book to be truly objective and informative so that clinicians and health educators can provide potential or current steroid users with the best information available. The book is designed to be read by clinicians and health educators who care for athletes so that the information might in turn be constructively passed on to the athlete. Beyond the text and topics of the book itself, perhaps its greatest value is found in its extensive references on the subject, which serve as a current and pertinent place to seek additional information. The tables generally assist in understanding the information to be conveyed, but there is a paucity of illustrations. Do not let the poor cover appearance of the book deter you: this is a good reference on the subject. The author and his contributors have provided the reader with an excellent source of material on the subject of anabolic steroid use in sport. To their credit, they present an honest picture of the risks and benefits of steroid use that can hopefully fill the occasional gap of trust and communication between members of the athletic community and the scientific and medical community. This is a good book for health educators and all sports medicine specialists who share in the care of athletes who may take a nabolicsteroids.

Library Journal

Recently, former pro football player Lyle Alzado died of cancer attributed to the use of anabolic steroids. Yesalis (professor of health policy, administration, exercise and sports science, Penn State) has edited an objective, in-depth collection of articles that examine anabolic-androgenic steroids, their effects, and long-term medical prognosis of use. Journalists, researchers, and former athletes discuss steroids in sports and society and offer solutions to this problem engendered by a win-at-all-cost philosophy. Alarmingly, the trend of steroid abuse is not only prevalent among male bodybuilders and athletes such as Alzado, but also among women and teenagers as documented in this study. This book is timely and scholarly and will be a valuable addition to any library receiving requests for scientific exercise material.--Albert Spencer, Coll. of Education, Univ. of Nevada-Las Vegas
