Beginning in the 1940s scholars began to place the Harlem Renaissance within the framework of African American history and literature. Much of this early work was published in Phylon and the CLA Journal, and most of it was done by black scholars. This volume includes essays by pioneers in the field of black literary studies and black history including Arthur P.
