Overview

With the direct, accessible, and pragmatic approach of Fowles and Cassiday's ANALYTICAL MECHANICS, Seventh Edition, thoroughly revised for clarity and concision, students will grasp challenging concepts in introductory mechanics. A complete exposition of the fundamentals of classical mechanics, this proven and enduring introductory text is a standard for the undergraduate Mechanics course. Numerical worked examples increased students' problem-solving skills, while textual discussions aid in student understanding of theoretical material through the use of specific cases.

Synopsis

Intended for a one-semester undergraduate course, this textbook uses numerous figures, derivations, and practical examples to explain the essential topics of the field. Chapters concentrate on issues like vectors, rectilinear motion, oscillations, general motion, noninertial reference systems, gravitation, planar motion, and Lagrangian mechanics. Fowles and Cassiday (both: University of Utah) explain fundamental concepts in terms of specific cases, and integrate an historical perspective throughout. Editorials

From the Publisher

"One of the strengths of this text has always been its figures and presentation of the mathematical concepts. The figures are excellent and will help students to gain a feel for the ideas The major strength of this text has always been its thorough presentation of the mathematics. Many texts leave out so many steps in the examples and derivations that students, especially those seeing the applications of differential equations for the first time, find it hard to follow and become discouraged. Incorporating the presentation of new mathematical concepts into the text rather than as supplements helps students to recognize the usefulness of the math. If I were to describe this text I would consider it a good physical overview to dynamics with good supportive explanations of the mathematics involved."
