This is the fifth title about Anansi for this author and illustrator team. Once again, the wily spider, Anansi, is up to his old tricks in order to get even with poor, unsuspecting Turtle. In the previous book, Turtle managed to turn the tables and outwit the spider. Now months have passed and Turtle receives an invitation to a party at Anansi's house. It takes Turtle a very long time to reach Anansi's, where he is rudely sent home because he is not wearing a costume. When at last Turtle again arrives for the party, he is told he must go home because he has not brought a dish. For a third time he makes the long trip home in order to make chocolate turtles. Again at Anansi's, the spider curtly informs Turtle that the party is over but that Anansi will enjoy the candy tomorrow. Now Turtle plots his revenge and soon Anansi is invited to a party in Turtle's house at the bottom of the river. All the animals have a wonderful time except Anansi. He cannot enjoy cake with ice cream because he must cling to Crab so he won't float away. Turtle's final revenge finds Crab and Anansi stranded on the moon. The droll humor of this tale is perfectly complemented by the bold, brightly colored illustrations. The depiction of Turtle in a pink rabbit costume is hilarious and sure to make youngsters laugh. Children will delight in hearing this tale of the spider's comeuppance. After Anansi invites Turtle to a party just to play a trick on him, Turtle exacts his revenge. Almost every page, illustrated in acrylic ink and colored pencils, has some comical element. Laughs abound from the twisted path on the party map invitation that Anansi initially sends to Turtle and then later when Turtle sends a similar one back, to the hilarious costumes that Turtle tries on before he makes his choice of what to wear. Crocodile and Hippo loom large on the page underwater as they try to guess the mystery animal party game. Stevens has captured additional humor in the animals' droll facial features.
