Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Lynne T. Braun, PhD, RN(Rush University College of Nursing)
Description: This review begins with an overview of anatomy and physiology and chemical, cell, and tissue organization. It includes a separate chapter on each body system, and a discussion of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance. The book includes a diskette of 100 multiple-choice questions to assess the reader's knowledge.
Purpose: It is useful as an adjunct to primary information sources and provides an excellent method of review. It meets the stated objectives of the authors.
Audience: This is a study guide developed especially for nursing students. Key material is presented in an outline format. Special features of this book include: learning objectives for each chapter; chapter overviews highlighting major concepts; points to remember summarizing major themes; study questions; and critical thinking and application exercises. It is appropriately targeted for nursing students. Other health science students may also benefit. The authors are credible experts on the subject matter.
Features: Illustrations are few in number and necessary. Most illustrations are shades of black and white and, therefore, key parts are difficult to identify. All references are pertinent and published within the last five to six years. The overall appearance is positive with the addition of shading and variations in font and color. The book also includes a glossary and answers to study questions, both valuable resources to the reader. Teaching tips (for patient education) appear sporadically and are unnecessary, espepcially since these teaching tips pertain to disease processes that are minimally introduced.
Assessment: This is clearly written and well organized. It provides the reader with key information in an outline format. It is useful as a study aid and review book for the target audience.
