School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-- A book that does justice to a frontier city that has many adventures associated with it. The economic base and the attitudes of people who come north are well covered in the historical and current overviews. The lack of roads and the quality of the land, divided by fast glacial rivers, streams, and muskeg swamps, are well portrayed. The use of airplanes to keep people in touch, winter festivals, and dog sledding are described at length and are depicted in the excellent quality full-color photographs. Oberle takes a bit of a ``gee whiz'' approach, but covers the uniqueness of many Alaskan customs, as well as highlights its natural wonders. Inclusion of Anchorage's cultural events, museums, art, and sports events tie the city's activities to those of other American cities. --Elizabeth Morrissett, Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage
