School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Competent and accessible books. Each title begins with a quick overview that helps to put the specific subject into the context of ancient Greek society. This section also includes a simple map and a concise description of city-states. All subjects are broken down into double-page chapters. For example, Jobs focuses on the doctor, merchant, banker, farmer, and more. Each spread includes at least one well-reproduced and well-selected illustration and a highlighted box that explains why the artwork is pertinent to the subject. Pale purple sidebars focus on thought-provoking facts or concepts, and they often include quotations from Greek philosophers, politicians, or poets. The writing is clear and to the point, and difficult words and ideas are well defined. The design, writing, and organization of these titles make them useful for assignments, easily digestible for students, and worthy purchases for school and public libraries.-Laura Reed, Pickering Public Library, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
